FIVE DAYS TILL POSITIVUS. RECOMMENDATIONS FROM STATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE
  • Positivus Festival_publicity photo.jpg

Many thousands of people will come together to the Positivus Festival in Salacgrīva next weekend. For the visitors to be able to enjoy the Festival all three days, the State Emergency Medical Service has some recommendations on taking care of your health and security.

Clothes are important – take weather conditions into account, as the Festival lasts three days and the Latvian summer is very changing. Better be prepared for both hot and sunny and wet and chilly weather. It is said that there are no bad weather conditions but unsuited clothes; we would like to add: the style of your clothing is not important, but its suitability for weather is.  In hot weather, wear suitable clothes: light-weight, bright, comfortable and of natural materials (cotton, linen) that lets your body breathe. Choose comfortable and “breathing” footwear. To protect against sun burns, use a sun lotion. Do not forget a headgear! In case it is chilly and wet, take a raincoat with you not to get soaked. Take with you several shifts of clothes and footwear to change if you get soaked – in order not to catch cold.

Remember to drink water if you want to feel good through the Festival. The best for refreshing is water – it is recommended to drink about 2 litres of water per day. Drink before you become thirsty. Remember that alcohol (also strong coffee and tea) intensifies dehydration, which can cause other health problems. Be cautious also with energy drinks. According to Disease Prevention and Control Centre, regular use of energy drinks or using them together with alcohol may cause serious health problems; also, the artificial colourings may cause allergic reactions. To stay in good condition all three days long – keep to the modesty principle in all.

Beware of ticks. Since the Festival’s territory is in a green area, use tick and mosquito repellents. Ticks most often adhere to the footwear or clothes at the height of the ankles and then they travel on your body looking for a place where to stick to your skin. Check regularly that there are no ticks on your clothes or body. Ticks can be better detected on bright clothes. If however a tick has stuck to your skin, do not try to remove it but go to the medical personnel who will be on duty at the Festival.

Watch what you eat! Beware of bees and wasps - they can be sitting on your food or in your drink.  An insect sting in the mouth can cause the oedema of the mouth mucous membrane and airways and the risk of suffocation.

 Do not take with you food that need to be kept in a fridge (meat, pates, sausages, fish, pies with cream, dairy products, salad with sour cream or mayonnaise etc).

To avoid infections, wash your hands often, use wet napkins or hand disinfection liquids.

The signs of an infection in the digestive tract or gastrointestinal tract are nausea, stomach aches, vomiting, diarrhoea and increased body temperature. If you feel these symptoms, immediately seek medical attendance from the medical personnel on duty at the Festival.

By water, be careful yourself and look after your friends. Be careful when going for a swim. If you want to live, do not go swimming if under the influence of alcohol. Do not jump in water on the head or the feet from heights. Do not go swimming at night, especially if the place is foreign, and do not swim alone. Watch your children near water.

If you are on medications, remember to take them with you to the Festival. It is recommended to prepare a separate bag with:

           the required medications if you have a chronic disease (diabetes, asthma etc) or anti-allergen drugs if you tend to have allergic reactions from bee or wasp stings, food products or other allergens;

           hygiene and protection products: sun lotion, insect repellents, hand disinfection gel, wet napkins, personal hygiene accessories.

Since the Festival is in open air, watch your steps to avoid injuries when walking on rough terrain, between wood roots, slippery moss etc.

Devote sufficient time for sleeping, to regain powers, energy and be able to enjoy the Festival to full. Keep together with your friends and also watch them.

If you feel bad or have an injury, seek medical help: at the Festival there will be first aid points, a special medical tent and ambulances.

We also would like to remind you – do not leave your friends! If a friend is too drunk, do not leave them alone in the Festival’s territory or in the car. If you need help, ask the nearest security guard.
